Welcome to droidcon London. A two day barcamp and conference exploring all aspects of developing for Android mobile devices.

Thursday is the barcamp, Friday is the conference day with tracks covering Development, Business, Design and valuable SDKs & APIs.

To investigate some odd structures that happen to have appeared there.

A man named Anish Kapoor has been employed by the government to make scientific equipment which has some kind of effect on the people viewing the equipment. It actually has a controlling effect. Sinister. Evocative, but I am unsure what of. It’s a mystery to be solved. What are they actually doing?

It could be anything, it would be silly to suggest anything yet without the necessary research. However, I do wonder whether the mirrors are some kind of magical object using the same kind of trick as what the financial institutions use. Mirror to reflect all of the criticisms resulting in them growing stronger even if bad spells are being put on them all around. That would be obvious. It would be interesting to find out if some other kind of process is happening with them that does not involve the reflection of ideas. Many people have suggested that other kinds of physical processes may be available if our minds are open to them, unfortunately we are earth born creatures. It might be that to comprehend such patterns of physical behaviour we would have to be from elsewhere.

The collection of “Street View” map imaging has landed Google in some hot water as of late;  its collection of US residential wireless addresses and 250,000 German homeowners opting-out from displaying their homes on Google’s maps have both cast the spotlight on the search giant.

Italy’s privacy regulator has told Google that if it wants to collect mapping data in the country, the company must clearly mark its “Street View” cars, publicly state the specific routes its cars would take and publish publicly available information in local newspapers and on radio in each individual district where its cars would operate.

Italian Privacy Authority President Francesco Pizzetti said:

“There has been strong alarm and also hostility in a lot of European countries against Google taking photos. We have received protests even from local administrations.”

Google’s response was usually coy, the search giant didn’t confirm details of the the Italian regulators decision but did state that it was in direct contact with the authority in regards to protecting personal data and making sure local residents were kept informed about its cars’ journeys.

During the month of September, acclaimed Mexican artist Damián Ortega set himself the challenge of creating new works in response to aspects of the daily news.

Each day he took inspiration from a newspaper; whether a news item, a photographic story or graphics selected from local, national or international press which he translated into a physical interpretation, be it a sculpture, installation, proposition or prototype for a future project.  The works made over this period have become both a sculptural chronicle of this period of time – and a dynamic reinterpretation of the notion of an art commission.

Damián Ortega is one of the leading sculptors of his generation. His Barbican commission follows important solo shows at ICA Boston (2009) and Centre Pompidou (2008), White Cube (2007) and Tate Modern (2005). He began his career as a political cartoonist before he turned to art, and the development of his characteristically ‘mischievous process of transformation and dysfunction’.
Damián Ortega was born in 1967 in Mexico City and currently works and lives in Berlin, Germany.
